Why the Menopausal Transition Is a Time of Inner Upheaval

The menopausal transition is not just a hormonal shift. It is a profound transformation—of the body, the nervous system, and the self-image. Many women sense that something is in motion. And yet, there is often little space to truly engage with that experience.

In addition to common physical symptoms like hot flashes, weight gain, sleep disturbances, or changes in the menstrual cycle, emotional and psychological challenges also arise. Mood swings, a more sensitive nervous system, exhaustion, irritability, inner restlessness, and a feeling of emptiness often appear. Anxiety, low moods, or a sense of no longer being oneself are not uncommon either.

Cycle, Sleep, and Energy: What Your Body Wants to Tell You

What many don’t realize: these changes are hormonally triggered, but they affect all areas of life. Self-perception shifts—as do needs, relationships, and priorities. And all of this happens during a time when many women are deeply involved in professional, family, and social responsibilities.

The menopausal transition is not just the end of fertility or a time of hot flashes. It is a profound turning point in which many women sense: “I can’t continue the way I have.” And yet, the new path often isn’t clear yet.

The body changes: cycle irregularities, disturbed sleep, weight gain, or dry mucous membranes are often only the most visible symptoms.

Then come the emotional aspects: mood swings, irritability, a sense of overwhelm or inner emptiness. Many women report no longer recognizing themselves, even while continuing to function outwardly.

The Invisible Side of Change: Soul, Self-Image, and Identity

The soul also begins to speak—softly but insistently. Old issues resurface. Unprocessed experiences, long-suppressed needs. Questions around purpose and identity. Around closeness, autonomy, and inner stability. The menopausal transition returns women to themselves—physically, emotionally, and existentially. And all this often happens in the midst of career peaks, family obligations, and a daily life that offers little space for withdrawal.

This is where my work begins.

  • I accompany women who are strong, yet sense they need to pause.
  • Women who don’t feel weak, but empty.
  • Not ill, but estranged from themselves.
  • Not depressed, but no longer fully alive.

I’m a lawyer with years of experience in high-responsibility professional settings, with a deep understanding of the challenges modern women face. At the same time, I’m a licensed psychotherapist, yoga therapist, and specialist in body-based regulation.

Why Raw Cacao Is a Nourishing Alternative During the Menopausal Transition

Instead of caffeine for a quick adrenaline kick, this phase often calls for something else: Warmth. Grounding. Nutrients.

I began replacing coffee with a cup of cacao—especially in the morning when the day is still open, or when hot flashes take me by surprise.

Raw cacao contains magnesium, iron, antioxidants, polyphenols, and tryptophan. It gently nourishes and supports the nervous system without overstimulating it. Cacao doesn’t make you “alert” in a pushing sense—it brings clarity. Presence.

For me, it’s more than a beverage. It’s a conscious pause.

How Raw Cacao Can Support You During the Menopausal Transition

  • Magnesium – Supports muscles (including the pelvic floor!), calms nerves, aids sleep
  • Iron – For energy, blood building, and inner stability
  • Calcium – Supports bone health
  • Zinc & Copper – For skin and immune system support
  • Polyphenols & Flavonoids – Anti-inflammatory and cell-protective
  • Theobromine – Gentle stimulation without caffeine stress
  • Tryptophan – Precursor to serotonin for mood and sleep

My Personal Cacao Ritual

Sometimes I drink my cacao pure, sometimes with the spice blend from cacaoloves.me. Occasionally with a drop of vanilla or frankincense, depending on my mood—or with a spoonful of vanilla protein powder if I know the day ahead will be intense.

Often, I sprinkle flowers on top. Not because it looks pretty—but because it reminds me that I’m worth the pause.

Cacao, for me, is not consumption. It is connection—with myself.

What Happens to the Pelvic Floor During the Menopausal Transition

Many of these changes also affect the pelvic floor—a part of the body that has long remained unspoken.

And yet, it is often particularly impacted during the menopausal transition: declining hormone levels, connective tissue weakening, changes in breathing patterns, muscle tone, and posture all play a role. What few people mention: emotional tension often settles here as well. A tense or weakened pelvic floor doesn’t just affect the bladder or bowels—it influences your entire body awareness. Your strength. Your presence. Your sense of being held and connected.

Cacao, Body Wisdom, and Clarity – How You Can Work With Me

In my pelvic floor coaching, I combine in-depth knowledge with physical exercises, nutrition, breathwork, and nervous system regulation.

And for those ready to go deeper, I offer 1:1 support—creating a space for integration, regulation, and realignment. Find out more on my website.
Not as a fix, but as an invitation to come back to yourself.
